Sustentabilidade Real® (Real Sustentability)
Concept
More than a commitment—a new methodology to fuse impact and development.
To create and develop sustainable, mining-based production systems, JS Minerais has devised and implemented a concept called Sustentabilidade Real® (Real Sustainability).
“Real Sustainability is a JS Minerais–exclusive concept that harmonizes economic, social and environmental impacts in a balanced, synergistic way.
Real Sustainability means generating the optimal economic, social, and environmental impact—in perfect balance and synergy.
An Integrated Ecosystem
Real Sustainability starts from the premise that “impactor” and “impacted” belong to the same ecosystem. Therefore, every action—from processing workflows to infrastructure deployment—is designed to create positive spillovers across economic, social and environmental dimensions. This intentional choreography of interactions generates predictable synergies, unlike conventional models where effects emerge haphazardly and can even be adverse.
The Interconnected Pillars
Economic Impact:
- Development and deployment of technologies that maximize mineral recovery;
- Reduction or elimination of tailings;
- Generation of by-products and enhanced profitability;
- Vertical integration planning across the value chain;
- Local, regional and national economic resilience.
Expected Results: More jobs, higher tax revenues, longer-lasting ventures and strengthened local infrastructure.
Social Impact:
- Establishment of social institutes dedicated to education and skills training;
- Community diagnostics conducted before operations begin;
- Tailored solutions for social vulnerabilities;
- Promotion of local cultural and technical empowerment.
Expected Results: A qualified local workforce, higher human development indices, and structured personal and technical growth.
Environmental Impact:
- Management and enhancement of water quality and availability;
- Restoration and integration of forest ecosystems into productive use;
- Adoption of clean energy matrices and cogeneration;
- Emissions neutralization and active pursuit of carbon-positive status;
- Proactive biodiversity protection via continuous monitoring.
Expected Results: Projects that leave positive environmental legacies, with communities aligned to nature stewardship.
Why It’s Different?
- Intentional design of synergies across all impact areas;
- No one-size-fits-all directives—each project is unique;
- From technical conception through social execution;
- Aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda—yet always reaching further.
When discussing this model, it’s important to note that, although Real Sustainability yields practices often associated with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), its approach is fundamentally different. JS Minerais embraces industry best practices aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda, yet believes Real Sustainability can deliver a far more significant impact than conventional sustainability frameworks.
Rather than relying on pre-set guidelines, the concept adapts to each project’s unique nature—its deposit characteristics, location, and local culture—to craft genuinely sustainable solutions. From beneficiation methods through community programs, every action treats both “impactor” and “impacted” as parts of a single ecosystem, fostering deeper, more positive interactions throughout the lifecycle.
"We believe sustainability must be a living system—shaped by each project’s unique character, local culture and real social needs."
Our Process:
Real Sustainability Work Process
At JS Minerais, Real Sustainability is a tangible methodology, structured into five essential stages:
Initial Research
Identification of promising areas (geological and socio-environmental) using our predictive model.
Formulation of sustainable use hypotheses.
Pre-Feasibility
Modeling and sampling to map mineralizations and recovery potentials.
Integrated assessment of economic, social, and environmental impact.
Feasibility
Economic studies aligned with Real Sustainability indicators.
Metallurgical tests to maximize recovery, reduce waste, and generate local employment.
Development
Integrated Design: process engineering that harmonizes operational efficiency, community benefits, and environmental preservation.
Concept: architectural and landscape design that highlights regional identity.
Implementation & Monitoring
Coordination of construction following best sustainability practices.
Real-time monitoring of key indicators, with continuous adjustments to ensure synergy.
Each stage underscores that those who impact and those impacted share the same ecosystem. This flow delivers predictable results and a lasting positive impact—exemplified by the Japiim project.
At JS Minerais, Real Sustainability transcends concepts—it's a living methodology that transforms visions into high-impact economic, social, and environmental legacies. Adaptable to any setting and evolving with cultures and innovations, it empowers projects to deliver tangible benefits that endure across generations.
